In and Around Duns

The Lodge at Wellfield House is located 600 meters from the Market Square in Duns.

Duns is a busy market town with a range of coffee shops, bars and restaurants. The two banks and post office are located facing the Market Square. 1 mile north of the town centre there is a fine golf course, the town also supports a successful rugby team and there is a tennis club close to the spacious public park. The Jim Clark Room, a museum dedicated to former Formula 1 racing champion Jim Clark is located in the centre of the town in Newtown Street and is open from 23rd March to 31st October.

Just 15 minutes walk from The Lodge at Wellfield House takes you to the historic 14th century Duns Castle (featured in the film “Mrs Brown” starring Judy Dench and Billy Connelly). There is an established nature reserve at the Castle which includes two man-made lochs. The wetland provides habitat for wildfowl.

The impressive Wedderburn Castle sits on the outskirts of Duns just a 5 minute drive from the centre. The Castle was constructed and designed by the famous Adam brothers Robert and James circa 1771-75. Wedderburn Castle was built for Patrick Home of Billie who had previously used the Adam brothers to create the nearby Paxton House at Paxton famous for its collection of Thomas Chippendale furniture.

The splendid Edwardian Manderston House sits on the eastern outskirts of Duns again only 5 minutes drive from Duns market Square. This splendid house was built for Sir James Miller under the architectural brilliance of John Kinross. The 56 acres of formal and informal gardens are a delightful extension of the charm associated with this house.

All four venues host weddings and other special functions.

There is fishing by permit on the river Whiteadder where a £30 day permit will allow you to fish salmon and trout. The Watch Reservoir at Longformacus provides boat and bank fishing for rainbow trout and brown trout.

Duns is surrounded by beautiful countryside with many excellent road’s for cycling runs including Duns to Dunbar, Duns to Haddington and Duns to Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

There is an excellent award winning beach just a short drive from Duns at Coldingham Bay where close by The National Trust of Scotland manage, together with Scottish Natural Heritage, a 60,000 seabird colony at St Abb’s Head where there is also a visitors centre and picnic facilities.

There are a number of picturesque towns, typical of the Scottish Borders, within a short distance from Duns including Melrose (24 Miles), Kelso (25 miles) and Jedburgh (34 Miles) to the west and the coastal towns of Eyemouth (13 Miles) and Berwick-Upon-Tweed (19 Miles) to the east.

Scotland’s beautiful capital city, Edinburgh is 43 miles from Duns.
